Aluminum and Zinc Pumps
Sodium, Mercury, & Potassium Pumps
Flowmeters
CMI Novacast manufactures electromagnetic pumps and flowmeters for
liquid metal. This technology is suitable for many
metals at temperatures up to
1472° F/800° C. Utilizing no moving
parts, the pumps and flowmeters create no turbulence.
Originally developed for the aluminum foundry industry, CMI Novacast pumps
have grown to fulfill the needs of many other metals. CMI Novacast has built pumps for
aluminum, zinc, sodium, mercury, potassium, NaK, and magnesium.
The pump flow rates are very controllable
with instantaneous changes. The pump is computer controlled with the ability to store and
recall many different profiles.
News
March 2011 - CMI Novacast received an order from General Motors for three PG450 electromagnetic pumping systems
for aluminum. These 3 lines will add to the existing 2 lines already in operation at GM’s Defiance, Ohio plant.
They are being used in the precision sand lines. GM is also using the PG450 in a number of precision sand lines
in the Saginaw Casting Plant. Delivery will be the end of June 2011.
January 2011 - CMI Novacast received a request for a non-contact electromagnetic flow meter to monitor sodium
flow at a mass flow rate of 23.4 – 365 L/min at a system pressure of 10 bar and a nominal temperature of 545° C.
The customer had a need for accuracy of +/- 1% full scale at 300° C. CMI Novacast redesigned the FS215HA to create
a new high-accuracy higher flow rate model – the FS365HA.
December 2010 - A national government laboratory had an immediate need for a small pump to deliver up to 2 gal/min
of sodium at a maximum system pressure of 6 bar and a maximum temperature of 700° F. This was much smaller than any
CMI Novacast stock pumps. Within six weeks, CMI Novacast engineered and delivered the CA15, which is a small
conduction pump. Also delivered was an FS15 non-contact electromagnetic flow meter for metering sodium metal, with a
maximum design temperature of 700° F.
November 2010 - CMI Novacast sells LA200 electromagnetic pump. Though normally operated in sodium, this application
shows the flexibility of the electromagnetic pumps as it will be pumping molten NaK. This LA200 will deliver 12 m³/h
at a Δ P of 3 bars. The maximum pressure is 15 bars at a maximum temperature of 600° C.

About CMI Novacast
CMI Novacast Inc. is a privately held company founded in 1972 as Cast Metals International by
Paul R. Gouwens. At that time, it was a consulting firm
endeavoring to introduce new technologies to the United States from foreign countries. One
of the companies introduced was GAAA of Lyon, France. GAAA was in the business of producing
electromagnetic pumps for metering of molten metal.
GAAA opened an office in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, in 1973 to service the North American market.
GAAA was purchased by Novatome in 1978, and in 1981 the French government nationalized Novatome
with the requirement that all work in aluminum cease. At that time, Cast Metals International
changed its name to CMI Novacast Inc. and took over the production and sale of the pumps as designed
by Novatome.
Since that time, CMI Novacast has done considerable development work and has introduced
several new designs of electromagnetic pump. These new designs rapidly became the most popular pumps in
the history of the electromagnetic pump, initially installed in the new Rover Group "LPS K Series" sand
casting plant in Birmingham, England, then in numerous other locations. Applications for the pumps have
continued to grow, with the predominant focus in the low pressure casting process area. These electromagnetic
pump systems have been installed world-wide with an excellent record of reliability.
CMI Novacast holds a world-wide license from Framatome (the successors to Novatome) for the
sale and production of electromagnetic pumps for the molten aluminum industry. Today, CMI Novacast
maintains its autonomy, and is run by Paul's son. CMI Novacast's commitment
to all customers is to deliver the most reliable, predictable, and high-performance
low pressure or gravity casting system in the industry.
